The McKinney Foundation launches its 4th Annual Event,

Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo on Saturday, August 10, 2013

Theme: Eliminating Childhood Obesity thru Education, Awareness & Access

Come join us in celebrating Back-to-School, healthy Children, Family and a Healthier Detroit!

Summer is a time to enjoy good music, healthy foods and Family! In August, The McKinney Foundation focuses its educational programming on matters related to health & wellness and hosts its signature program. In an effort to ensure a healthier metro Detroit we are collaborating with the Healthcare, Faith and Wellness communities to provide a unique array of activities centered on chronic health, emotional and social concerns impacting our city.

The 4th Annual “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo is a full-day event, Saturday, August 10, 2013 from 11:00am–5pm, at NEW location Kids Row (next to Giant Slide) held on beautiful Belle Isle Park in the heart of downtown Detroit.

The purpose of this event is to reduce health disparities in metro Detroit by bringing together the greater health and wellness communities to educate families about this issue and to share programs that are free and/or low-cost, especially for metro Detroit residents who are ‘uninsured and underinsured’.

The “Celebrating a Healthier Detroit” Expo will consists of informational seminars, special invited speakers, and exhibits targeting health issues relevant to our community, to include: Emphasis on childhood obesity and diet-based diseases, hyper-tension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, asthma, HIV/AIDS, depression, preventative care and wellness for the entire family, health literacy, nutrition and fitness.

This event features healthy cooking demonstrations and tastings events, exercise workshops, educational seminars, free give-a-ways, prizes, music, song, dance and more!

The McKinney Foundation has identified the following goals to achieve for its upcoming event:

  1. The Expo will attract over 1,000 Metro Detroit families;
  2. The Expo will connect metro Detroit families with the broader Health and Wellness community;
  3. The Expo will increase awareness of beneficial health/preventative care and wellness programs that are free and/or low-cost to Detroit residents.

The above mentioned goals are achieved in collaboration with local, state, and national health and wellness partners.

The Mission of The McKinney Foundation is to strengthen the metropolitan Detroit community by reinvesting in the citizenry through quality educational programs which help promote healthy living, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility.

Our Health Impact Statement

To improve the health of metro Detroiters by eliminating obesity and diet-related diseases, in youth age 0-18 and their families, and bridge the ‘gap in information’ that exists by providing quality education, awareness and access to relevant resources that promotes healthy living.

The McKinney Foundation looks forward to partnering with like-minded organizations to provide the metro Detroit area with quality programming in health, entrepreneurship and environmental responsibility. A detailed event calendar will be posted soon.
